Option Setting in IMP

OPTIONS give extra facilties to users so that they can manage the email operations better. In this page some of the frequently used options are described.

Managing different Identities in IMP

The most important setting in IMP is to setup your idenitity. By default one identity is deletermined by your login parameters. In addition, one can setup identities and select the appropriate one when actually composing a mail. This is very useful for people who have multiple roles to play in an organization. With only one email account, one can assume different roles and manage the related activities using this facility. To do this follow the steps below:

  • Login to IMP
  • Click on the Options icon
  • Click on the Personal Information option
  • You can then create, edit, or delete different identities by following the links therein
  • Click on the Save Options button

Filters and Handling SPAM

At IITB, SPAMs are identified using SPAMASSASSIN software. The SPAM messages are tagged with **SPAM** in the SUBJECT line. It must be emphasized here that the software can sometime produce anomalous results to the effect that some genuine mails may get marked as SPAM whereas some SPAM may go undetected. This is so, because there is no clearcut definition of SPAM and the nature of SPAM keeps changing. The software uses a BAYESIAN algorithm to learn what is SPAM and it has been quite effective in IITB environment. The idea here is to create a "SPAM" folder and define FILTER rules to put all messages tagged as above into that folder. Since some useful mails may also get marked as SPAM occasionally, mails in that folder can be inspected and removed periodically. Filters can be created as below:
  • Login to IMP
  • Click on the Options icon
  • Click on the Filters option
  • You get a page showing options to choose when the filter rules will be applied. There is also a link "Edit your filter rules". Choose that to define the filter rules. The order in which filter rules are applied can also be chosen by the user by using Move Up and Move Down buttons.
  • Click on the Save Options button
